The problem (indicated by the acronym Dmsms, diminishing manufacturing sources and material shortage) occurs when an item or an electronic component is no longer available because it is no longer produced by the supplier or is no longer available from distributors or Oem.
The problem
Although, in principle, any electronic product may be considered immune to this problem, the sectors most affected by the problem of obsolescence are those where the equipment normally have a lifespan much longer then technological lifecycle of individual components used: military, aerospace, medical-biomedical, telecommunications, industrial automation, automotive, to mention only the main ones.
In these areas, the electronic systems are so complex that they require a long time to design and test cycles, whereby they can suffer a shortage of components and spare parts after only a few years from their design, sometimes before putting into production. Added to this is the fact that often these systems have high costs and can offer a return on investment only if they are operated for a long time, even 20 years or more, during which need to be repaired and maintained trust.
